Text Features

In writing on Wednesday, we looked through some nonfiction books to make a list of the text features that we noticed. I specifically selected these nonfiction books because they resemble what our informational research reports will look like as final products.  In groups, the students were able to identify quite a few text features within their nonfiction book.

Next, we had to decide which features from our list MUST go into our research reports, since it would be overwhelmingly impossible to include all of the text features we listed. The students decided that these features must be included: table of contents, headings, photographs, captions, and a resource page.  It students want to include other nonfiction text features that's great, but not expected.

As students then started researching, I asked that they be on the lookout for some text features to include in their final presentation.  If they save these features as they research, then it will make creating the final presentation later a lot easier.
